NFL Rule Changes for the 2025/2026 Season

NFL Rule Changes for the 2025/2026 Season

The NFL has approved several rule changes for the 2025-2026 season. These include changes to overtime rules, kickoff rules, and instant replay. Additionally, first downs will now be measured virtually using cameras instead of traditional chains.

Here's a breakdown of the key changes:

Overtime: The regular season overtime rules are now aligned with the playoff rules, meaning both teams are guaranteed a possession, even if the first team to possess scores a touchdown. The overtime period is also shortened to 10 minutes.

Kickoffs: Touchbacks on kickoffs will be moved to the 35-yard line instead of the 30-yard line. Onside kicks can now be attempted at any point in the game, rather than just the last two minutes, but still only when a team is trailing.

Instant Replay: The replay officials will have expanded authority to review and potentially overturn penalties related to facemasks, horse collar tackles, hits on defenseless players, roughing the kicker, and tripping, but only if a flag has been thrown on the play.

First Downs: First downs will be measured using Sony's Hawk-Eye cameras, replacing the traditional chain measurements.
