CHICAGO CUBS END 108-YEAR WORLD SERIES DROUGHT

The Chicago Cubs are arguably one of the most popular professional baseball teams in the world today. Throughout their history, they have also been known as the White Stockings, Chicago Orphans, Chicago Colts, and with many other nicknames. However, the team was nicknamed the “Cubs” by the Chicago Daily News in 1902, although not officially becoming the Chicago Cubs until the 1907 season. The Chicago Cubs play in Major League Baseball as a member of the national league Central division. The team has an expansive sporting history that includes impressive victories and crushing defeats. The Cubs have also been responsible for producing some amazing talents over the years who have no doubt contributed a lot to the baseball world.

The Cubs Curse

Perhaps no team in major professional sports has suffered more heartbreak than the Chicago Cubs. Some people attribute their drought to just bad luck, while many others, especially on the North Side argue that the team is cursed. The curse began during a game in the 1945 World Series, when William Sianis tried to take his goat, Murphy, to a Chicago Cubs game for good luck, but the goat was ultimately denied entry, even though he bought himself two tickets to attend Game 4 of the Series.

Being a fairly notable Chicagoan, he appealed this case to the owner of the stadium, P.K. Wrigley. Wrigley still refused the attempted act and when Sianis asked why not, Wrigley responded “because of the odor of your goat!’. Sianis angrily cursed “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field!”

Since that day, the team has been close to winning a handful of league titles but something always seems to halt Chicago’s successes. The Cubs truthfully never won a World Series again, despite many good teams, especially in the past 20 years. People started to actually think that the reason the Cubs are losing so many key games was because of Billy Goat’s curse. Before 1945, the Chicago Cubs were among the most successful teams in baseball, with 51 winning seasons to their credit, two World Series wins and 16 pennants.

Many attempts have been made over the decades to lift the curse, which Sianis himself, withdrew before his death in 1970. Even his nephew Sam who is current CEO of his company, Tavern, has appeared in Wrigley Field with a goat on Opening Day several times to show that there were no hard feelings with Cubs.

How the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series
